Welcome to London: Battle in the Capital

Get ready for Europe’s most exciting u14 & u12 Christmas tournament based in London, England, the Battle in the Capital! This event is for club teams from across Europe that seek intense competition in one of the world’s most incredible cities, where players will have the opportunity to compete against European opposition and explore Britain’s lively and historic capital.

Our tournament gives teams, players and coaches the opportunity to:
  • Compete against high-level European opposition
  • Network and build relationships with other players and coaches
  • Build team unity and togetherness
  • Play in a state of the art facility
  • Visit one of the most historic and exciting cities in the world

Tournament Location

London is the home of British basketball, where raw talent and ability is mixed with work ethic, toughness and heart to produce some of the country’s most elite young players.

London has some incredibly good athletes with the burning desire to compete and win - any games against teams from London are a battle as they are unafraid to scrap and fight their way to victory, hence the tournament’s title of “Battle in the Capital!”

The Battle in the Capital will allow players and coaches to take part in exciting competition between European and UK teams, network with like-minded individuals from across Europe and enjoy the excitement of this unique tournament in one of the greatest cities in the world.

Tournament Information

The tournament play will take place at one of Britain’s finest sports facilities, the University of East London. UEL’s £21 million sports dock, which was opened in 2012, has two huge indoor arenas where the tournament action will unfold.

The Battle in the Capital will feature:

16 x U14 teams (8 European, 8 UK)

The U14 Boys tournament will feature 8 European and 8 UK club teams, who will be split into 4 groups of 4 teams. Within pool play on Day 1 each team will play 3 games, and on day 2 the top 8 teams will playoff in a bracket, and the bottom 8 teams in a bracket, with each bracket culminating in a championship game.

8x U14 girls teams (4 European, 4 UK)

The U14 Girls tournament will feature 4 European and 4 UK club teams, who will be split into 2 groups of 4 teams. Within pool play on Day 1 each team will play 3 games, and on day 2 the top 4 teams will playoff in a bracket, and the bottom 4 teams in a bracket, with each bracket culminating in a championship game.

8x U12 boys teams (4 European, 4 UK)

The U12 Boys tournament will feature 4 European and 4 UK club teams, who will be split into 2 groups of 4 teams. Within pool play on Day 1 each team will play 3 games, and on day 2 the top 4 teams will playoff in a bracket, and the bottom 4 teams in a bracket, with each bracket culminating in a championship game

Itinerary

After arriving on Tuesday 26 December and settling into your hotel, you will spend Wednesday 27 December visiting the sites in London. Upon your return you will be able to visit the Westfield Shopping Mall for evening dinner and shopping.

The tournament starts on Thursday 28 December with 3 group games and finishes on Friday 29 December with playoffs and finals. You will then be free to visit London on the evening. Departures will be Saturday

Option A: Arrival on tuesday dec. 26 (afternoon), including 4 nights stay

Excursions

The hustle and bustle of Britain’s capital city is the perfect location for a high-level tournament, where teams will benefit from not only the amazing on-court action, but will have the chance to have a complete cultural experience.

Visiting teams will reside close to the heart of the city, home to some of Britain’s most incredible landmarks. Teams will visit the centre of London on the Wednesday and have the opportunity to get up close and personal with Big Ben, take in the incredible views of the city from the London Eye, stroll through Covent Garden and enjoy the grandeur of Trafalgar Square.

Some of London’s most famous landmarks and attractions that you can visit include:
  • The South Bank: a hub of cultural and dining experiences on the River Thames
  • London Eye: a giant ferris wheel offering incredible views of the capital city
  • Big Ben: the Houses of Parliament’s famous clock tower, built in 1859
  • Buckingham Palace: the glamorous residence of Queen Elizabeth II, attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists each year
  • St. Paul’s Cathedral: a magnificent baroque church, designed in 1673 and built at the highest point of the city
  • Covent Garden and Leicester Square: the bustling centre of London’s nightlife with restaurants, theatres and other entertainment options
The Battle in the Capital offers an incredible opportunity to mix high-intensity basketball with a once in a lifetime trip to one of the most incredible cities in the world, a chance not to be missed for any players or coaches!

Accommodation

Visiting teams will reside in the nearby hotels, a short distance from the UEL SportsDock and a tube ride away from the City Centre. Players and coaches will stay in double or triple rooms.

The hotel is next to London City airport, and is easily accessible via public transport from all other major London airports.

You will be transported between the hotel and the arena via frequent transit buses that will allow teams to relax and prepare for each game at the hotel, and arrive at the arena in a timely manner.

Breakfast will be provided by the hotel, lunch by the Sportsdock and evening meals by the hotel, or one of our catering partners such as Nandos or Wagamama. We will provide a transit bus in the evenings between the hotel and the huge local shopping mall, Westfield, where teams can enjoy a great selection of dining and shopping experiences.

As well as players and coaches, Battle in the Capital offers supporters’ packages for friends and family who wish to join the team on their London experience, and supporters will stay in the same location as their team.

Our package is designed for you to get the maximum out of your visit to London including visiting iconic attractions, enjoying shopping and local dining as well as competing in a great basketball tournament.

3 nights tournament package (Wednesday 27th - Saturday 30th december) Option B

  • Includes tournament entry, 3 nights bed and breakfast in quality hotel on Wednesday - Friday, lunch on Wednesday - Friday, dinner on Tuesday - Thursday (Friday in London) and all hotel/ arena/Westfield transit costs during tournament
  • Players €297 Coaches / Supporters €269.


4 night tournament package (Tuesday 26 – Saturday 30 December) Option A

  • Includes tournament entry, 4 nights bed and breakfast in quality hotel on Tuesday - Friday, lunch on Wednesday - Friday, dinner on Tuesday - Thursday (Friday in London) and all hotel/ arena/Westfield transit costs during tournament.
  • Players €350 Coaches / Supporters €320.
We expect demand for this tournament to be high so early registration is advised to avoid disappointment.

Registration

  • To register your team and ensure you have your place reserved you must pay the deposit by October 17th 2017.
  • If you require some variation to the above packages please discuss this with us.
  • Transits from London airports can be arranged at an additional cost.
  • We advise teams of 12 players, although we will accept 10.
  • Payment in full is required 60 days before the tournament.
